Why teach?

We need you to help shape the next generation of tradespeople! You probably know that there is a huge demand for skilled tradespeople. To deal with this, the Queensland Government has recently created a new state-wide Trade and Technician Skills Institute, SkillsTech Australia to lead trades training in Queensland. Trades training places have increased, with an additional 17,000 places being made available
each year.

This is your opportunity to gain a personal sense of satisfaction from passing on your wealth of knowledge, experience and skills in developing the next generation of tradespeople. In return TAFE Queensland offers you a variety of benefits including an attractive salary package, professional development opportunities, and a family friendly working environment.

What will you do as a trade teacher?

As a TAFE Queensland trade teacher, you will:

  • teach and assess the performance of your students in a variety of ways, across multiple campus locations, in classrooms, workshops and in their workplace - they will rely on your expertise and adaptability to show them the way.
  • coax, encourage and praise the efforts of your students - your support and ongoing guidance will make the difference.
  • develop and improve our training delivery within a team environment - we want to constantly advance the way we do things.
  • keep in close contact with your industry - we want you to be aware of changing industry developments and any new technologies and techniques.
  • use your business-know-how - we want your input into the future growth of TAFE Queensland.

What are we looking for in our trades teachers?

All you need to become a TAFE teacher is:

  • five years post-trade training industrial experience, or
  • nine years full-time industrial experience, and/or
  • teaching experience and your trade qualification or equivalent.

Currency in your trade is required.

You do not need teaching experience to apply to become a TAFE trade teacher, as if appointed, we will fund you to obtain the minimum qualification of a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA).

To deliver excellence in trades training for our apprentices, we also look for tradespeople who:

  • have enthusiasm for their trade and will create an environment in which students are motivated to learn.
  • have the ability to 'get the message' across to students.
  • have good interpersonal skills and establish a good rapport with students. You are able to manage difficult situations and communicate effectively to influence and respond to the needs of students/apprentices.
